Match Report: Stokesley Men’s 1s vs Doncaster 2s

Yorkshire & North East Men's Division 1

Back at Fortress McMillan, Stokesley Men’s 1s looked to bounce back from a disappointing defeat against Leeds Adel the previous week. Facing a strong Doncaster 2s side who were level on points at the start of the day, Stokesley knew a disciplined and determined performance would be essential.

The game began brightly for Stokesley, who immediately showed intent and created some early chances. A fierce reverse strike from Jack Atha hit the post, and another effort forced a superb diving save from the Doncaster keeper, showing that Stokesley meant business. Once Stokesley adjusted to Doncaster’s high-energy midfield – youthful, fast, and full of running – they began to control possession, playing the ball around with confidence and precision.

Stokesley’s pressure soon paid off as they forced a short corner, which Mathew Breeze confidently converted to give Stokesley a 1-0 lead. With the momentum building, Stokesley continued to press forward, capitalising on their attacking opportunities. Just before the half-time whistle, a slick passing move opened up another chance, leading to another short corner, which Breeze expertly slotted home for his second of the match. Heading into the break with a 2-0 lead, the lads knew they had Doncaster on the ropes.

The half-time team talk focused on staying brave, seizing the moment, and going for the kill. And that’s precisely what Stokesley did. Not long after the restart, they earned yet another short corner, and Breeze once again found the back of the net, completing his hat-trick in style. With a commanding 3-0 lead, Stokesley knew Doncaster would throw everything they had into clawing back into the game.

In the face of mounting pressure, the Stokesley defence held firm. The back four, combined with some brilliant saves from their keeper, worked tirelessly to preserve their clean sheet, thwarting Doncaster’s relentless attacks. The defensive organisation and resilience were a testament to the team’s commitment and composure.

Then came the highlight of the match. “Chappy” produced a moment of pure magic, channelling his inner Lionel Messi as he weaved through five Doncaster players with sublime footwork. In a dazzling solo run, he rounded the keeper and finished with a powerful reverse stick strike, sealing the game in emphatic fashion. This goal not only put the result beyond doubt but earned him a clean sweep of Man of the Match votes – a performance to remember.

In the closing stages, a touch of ill-discipline crept in, leading to Mathew Breeze picking up the DOD award despite his hat-trick heroics. Regardless, the team’s overall display was a massive improvement from last week, and the result saw them briefly sitting top of the table – a huge achievement for the league newcomers. Although they eventually settled in second place, Stokesley’s strong form and team spirit have put them in an excellent position moving forward.

The lads will look to carry this momentum into their next fixture as they continue their quest for top honours in Yorkshire & North East Men's Division 1.
