After finishing the first half of the season top of the table, the first game back after the new year was the biggest game of the season so far. Stokesley’s warmup being comfortably more organised than the students showed from the first play.

Quarterback Breezy flung one down the pitch from the pushback and after some good work from Lewis the ball fell to the captain. Time froze as the ball, slightly bobbling, was met with a pure connection for one of the few times this season from the skipper and the ball buried itself in the top left corner. Although Trig did point out that the goal was too far to the left at the start of the second half, Jack can take some credit for the sumptuous strike.

Shortly later the captain found himself on the end of another chuck and buried a backhand shot to make it 2-0. Having only just learnt how to do this it was nothing short of a miracle that the ball didn’t hook and go out for a sideline.

On the 8th minute he once again found himself all alone in the D. He had this to say after the game: “Smashed it from 4 yards through the keepers legs after their defender passed it off the foot of there other defender and it just fell at my feet. Clinical.”

The shellshocked Newcastle Uni team dug in and scrapped to get two goals back with the help of some umpiring decisions but after a reset at half time not only were we more compact but we quickly made it 4-2 thanks to a trademark Breezy drag.

As usual Dhruv couldn’t listen to Phil Rose and decided to get yet another card for dissent followed by a clumsy tackle from Tom it meant that they put some extra pressure on us and got another back. But some good defending including a Ricky Ponting esque pull off the goal line from Phil meant that we ended up 4-3 winners extending our lead at the top of the table.

Next game: Wakefield M2 - HOME (Sunday 19th january 2025, 12:00 push back)
